Reverend Maramba Sri Somananda thero took the initiative to start the school in 1902. School commenced in a temporarily built hut in a land which belonged to Vilpita Temple. there were 08 students at the beginning. Later the school was moved to a land named "Matarage Watta". There after the school was governed under the Parama Vingnanartha Buddhist Association. By the year 1920 there were 03 teachers and 108 students at the school. No of teachers and students rose up to 06 and 200 respectively in 1930. The pioneer of the school Rev. Maramba Sri Somananda thero donated 1/2 acre of land for the school play ground. By the year 1940 the student population of the school increased up to 300 while teaching staff increased to 09. The school won the "Sugeeshwara Shield" continually in 1951,1958 and 1959. The school became a Director Governed School in 1960 December the 8th. On the 18th of March 1963 the school was chosen to be Governed by the Central Government and the no of students and teachers were 671 and 14 respectively by then. The principal of the school was Mr. D. M. A. Gunarathne. The school was promoted a Maha Vidyalaya on the 1st of January 1972. There were 889 students and 32 teachers in it then. The student population grew over one thousand by 1980s. By now the school owned 5 acre land to its name. The foundation to the present progress of the school was laid in 1990s. At this time the school could obtain a lot of physical resources and infrastructural facilities. The devotion and dedication of the then principal Mr. S. L. Ariyadasa in achieving this development should be highly appreciated. Electricity power supply and water facilities were given to the school on the 17th of March 1993 and 1st of April 1993 respectively. The school was selected to developed as a DSD School from the year 1995. Telephone facilities were given to school on the 30th of November 2000 and from the year 2002 Advance level commerce and Dancing subject streams were started. While the computer laboratory was equipped with 18 computers in 2004 internet facilities was given last year.
